Musculoskeletal Radiology

Welcome to the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Musculoskeletal Radiology Section. Our section, a division of the Radiology department, consists of three full time radiologists and two part time radiologists. Section faculty members handle the full gamut of imaging as well as many diagnostic and therapeutic procedures related to the musculoskeletal system. The section has a sub-specialized spine service handling multiple diagnostic and therapeutic spine related procedures.

Mission

To provide musculoskeletal imaging services that are timely, cost effective, appropriate and of the highest quality for our primary concern, our patients.
To educate healthcare professionals including medical students, residents, faculty and staff.
To contribute to the understanding of health and disease through imaging and related clinical and basic science research.

Services Provided

The Musculoskeletal Radiology Section provides interpretation of all imaging related to the musculoskeletal system. These include radiograph interpretation, fluoroscopy, magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography and musculoskeletal ultrasound. The section also offers diagnostic and therapeutic procedures of the musculoskeletal system under ultrasound, CT, and fluoroscopic guidance. Procedures include arthrography, tenography, treatment of calcific tendinopathy, ganglion cyst aspiration, therapeutic and diagnostic joint injection and aspiration, peripheral nerve blocks, tumor biopsy, tumor embolization, and tumor ablation. Spine related procedures include myelography, epidural injections, nerve blocks, biopsy, kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty and other therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

Hospital Affiliation

The Musculoskeletal Section members hold full appointments at Jackson Memorial Hospital, Bascom Palmer/Anne Bates Leach Hospital, University of Miami Hospitals and Clinics, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the University of Miami Hospital.

Area of Expertise

Areas of interest and expertise of faculty members include sports medicine imaging, musculoskeletal ultrasound, tumor imaging, spine related procedures, and resident/medical student education.
Resources

There are 8 clinical high field MRI units on the university campus including 3T and large bore magnets. There are multiple multislice computed tomography units and a number of ultrasound machines with high frequency transducers optimized for musculoskeletal imaging.

Education

The Musculoskeletal Section Faculty prides itself on its resident teaching. Faculty members have been awarded several “Teacher of the Year” and the section has won “Best Lecture Series” awards in recent years. Readouts at the workstation provide daily teaching and discussion. The section has four to five weeks of lectures each year including both didactic and case based presentations. There is also a weekly resident case conference. Each week there is a Sports Medicine Conference and a Sarcoma Conference both held with our Orthopaedic colleagues.
