Faculty Hero: Dr. Javier Casillas

Javier Casillas, MD, Professor of Clinical Radiology, is the newest University of Miami Medical Group faculty hero.

After joining the Miller School in 1984, Dr. Casillas was immediately recognized as a person who aimed for excellence. From interpreting imaging studies and performing interventional procedures to consulting with other clinicians, educating residents and fellows, and even serving in administrative roles, his intent to make all those around him better physicians is an obvious success.

“It is not only his knowledge and expertise which endears him to all his colleagues,” said Robert M. Quencer, MD, the Robert Shapiro Professor of Radiology and Chairman. “It is also his charm, understanding and compassion which make him the ultimate team player.”

Dr. Casillas, dubbed the “quintessential academic physician,” contributes to the Miller School’s mission through excellence in clinical service, education, and scholarly achievements. For the past 20 years, he has served as chief of the Section of Abdominal Radiology, where he has practiced and taught the most advanced techniques in ultrasound, CT and MR. Combined, he has published and presented hundreds of papers on a number of critical areas in Radiology, such as neuroendocrine tumors, retroperitoneum lesion analysis, hepatic masses, and MR determination of complications in solid organ transplantation. Dr. Casillas also is the past winner of the Outstanding Teacher Award in Radiology and has won similar teaching honors from the Department of Surgery.

“Dr. Casillas exhibits the qualities to which we all aspire,” said Steven Falcone, MD, MBA, Associate Vice President for Medical Affairs and Associate Executive Dean for Practice Development. “He always makes himself available for his colleagues and referring physicians, and is a vocal advocate of improving the patient experience. In addition to being a great clinician, he does a fantastic job teaching residents and fellows and is admired by all who interact with him.”

Please join us in thanking and congratulating Dr. Casillas, our newest UMMG Faculty Hero!
